The Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower Mighty Heroes boxset offers a bit of an escape from this, allowing you to bolster your armies (or Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower games, I suppose) for a reasonable price. Unfortunately I can't speak to their use in the game as I don't play it.
